Creating a unique identity

Before you dive head first into selecting your domain name their are some things that you need to consider. You don't want to act too hastily and find out later that you're not satisfied with the name that you've selected. Unless you're prepared to start over you should not change your domain name.

A guide to selecting your domain name

  1. The first thing you should do when selecting your domain is to make sure you select a domain name that describes or as closely relates to the subject matter (content) of your web site as possible.
For example, if your site is about winter sports, then the ideal domain name would be wintersports.com, net or org.
  2. Ideally, the domain name should also reflect the nature of your business or the topic of your site.
for example, if your site is about snow skiing, then the ideal domain name would be snowskiing.com, net or org.
  3. When you select your domain name, try to select one that is easy for people to remember. This article, the perfect domain name may give you a few more ideas on what you should consider before you name your site.

Coming up with the ideal domain name isn't always easy and you may not be able to get the name that you really want. You just have to keep trying until you get the name that best describes your site.

How do domain names work?

A domain name works like an address forwarding service. When you select your domain name, that domain is assigned a unique series of numbers, such as 123.23.234.45, called the IP address. Your web sites content sits on a host computer with that IP address. When someone types in your domain name it is forwarded to that IP address.

We use domain names instead of IP addresses because, unless your "rain man", its a lot easier to remember a name rather than a long series of numbers.
