Creating a good web page title

All search engines place a high degree of importance on the title of your web page but most webmasters fail to give it the attention it deserves.

The title is part of the head tags of your page and is considered by SEO pro's as more a part of optimization than basic design. The reason that I am covering the head and meta tags now is because they are part of building a web page and it is much easier and quicker to optimize as you go. You should include the meta tags and especially the title tag before you publish your web site.

The title

Your web page title is considered one of the most important elements and sufficient time should be taken to ensure that you describe the subject of your page as succinctly and accurately as possible. Your title should be short, descriptive and to the point.

A good title should include your most important keyword and that keyword should be the first word of your title if at all possible. Your title is a summery of your web page and it doesn't need to be cute or catchy.

Its evident that creating a good web page title is very important to the success and quality of your web site so, please read the article "The title an accurate and descriptive summery" for a more in depth look at creating a good title.

Document type

The <!DOCTYPE> declaration is the very first thing in your document, before the <html> tag. This tag tells the browser which HTML or XHTML specification the document uses. Theirs not much you can say about a DTD, but it is important. This DTD tells the browser that the page is a public document using w3schools standard html 4.0 transitional and it is written in English. Its part of the "right way" to build a web page so make sure you include the DTD in your page.

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
