Free FTP programs

FTP stands for the geeky term "File Transfer Protocol". This is how you (transfer) get your new web pages from your computer and (upload) into the root directory of your web site. The Root Directory is where all the pages of your web site is stored on the server of your web hosting company such as Yahoo, Godaddy and so on.

The best way to upload your files to your server is to use an FTP client. Luckily, their are many free FTP programs that you can download and use. You can type "free ftp programs" into your search bar and search for the ftp program that turns your crank or you can just use one that I've tested and listed below.

These are the two free ftp clients that I use and they work great.

  • FileZilla is a really good free ftp client and it's easy to use. You can download the latest version of their FileZilla free ftp client by clicking the link.

  • SmartFTP is another great free ftp program client which allows you to transfer files between your local computer and a server on the Internet. You can download it by clicking the Smartftp link.

How to upload your html files to your server

Files are uploaded to the root directory of your web site by means of FTP.

When you set up your hosting account you will be asked to create a user name and a password for your account. This is what you will use to log in to your server and the Root Directory. of your web site.

When you set up your ftp client it will ask for the address of your root directory (server), your user name and your password so that it can connect with your server.

  • address: Change the http:// to ftp:// and then the address of your web site.
  • user name: The name you used when you set up your hosting account.
  • password: The password you used to set up your hosting account.

Once your ftp client is set up all you do is open it and click connect. Your ftp client will connect to your server and you're ready to go. Just drag and drop your files to your directory.

Uploading files using Internet Explorer

You can also use IE to upload your files. Open IE and type ftp://www.yourdomain into the address bar at the top of your page. A dialog box will appear and ask for your user name and password. Enter the information and click log on. A new page will open.

Next, go to "my documents" and open the file where you have your web pages. In the upper right corner of your "my documents file", click minimize. (way up at the top in the blue bar. Its the one in the middle.) Now you should be able to see both pages. Now, just drag your files into your root directory.

How do I drag and drop stuff? Geez, all you gotta do is hold the left mouse button down on the file and draaag!

NOTE: Your Internet Explorer FTP client functionality might not be turned on by default. To enable your FTP client, go to Tools >Internet Options >Advanced tab, and select Enable Folder view for FTP sites.
